France and Paris, Paris and France. You’ll have a great time exploring Paris, but you’ll miss places like Bordeaux and St. Tropez if you don’t get out of the city.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux is both a city and the center of the wine region in France. As a city, Bordeaux is surprisingly bereft of things to see. One can find unique statutes, fountains and the like, but there isn’t really a particular location to mark of on your, “I saw that” list. The city is, however, a good place to relax, drink and eat. For relaxation, you can put around this low key town and take in food at the outdoor cafes in the Place de la Comedie. The specialty food of the region are canellas, which are very good. If you’re with the wine and cheese crowd, Bordeaux is going to seem much more exciting. The surrounding region produces wine by the mega cask loads and you can visit locations such as Chateau Mouton-Rothschild to smell and taste the grapes. Moderation is suggested as you want to avoid the grapes of wrath the next morning!

St. Tropez

St. Tropez has gone through roughly three stages in its history. Originally, the town was a little fishing village no different than others dotting the coast of France. At some point, however, it became the place to be for artist who had given up on Paris. No less than the painters Matisse, Signac and Seurat lived and worked in the town. Fortunately or unfortunately, those times have passed. While artist still populate the town, St. Tropez is now the hangout of celebrities and the wealthy. While still a beautiful location, the over the top glitz of St. Tropez is a bit much.

Once you get out of Paris, your options are wide open when it comes to exploring France. Bordeaux is definitely worth a visit while St. Tropez tends to be a take it or leave it destination. I left it.

(And as eveyone knows, the coolest bluffer may well prevail as well!)

Assuming you haven’t figured out casino gaming, do please read on — To clarify terms, a betting hall is a structure that presents gaming. Paying Customers are encouraged to gamble by having a bash at the slot-machines or trying out another pastimes of luck. Gambling saloon games generally include logically derived percentages incorporated which maintain that the gambling saloon preserves an edge over the clients.

A lot of betting house games can sway you into getting habituated speedily. the good old slotmachine, a cash operated machine with three or more cogs which gyrate once an arm coupled to it is pushed. This gadget most often pays out in correlation to a row of motifs shown on the dials on the appliance. Lamentably, casino games furnish the false impression of domination, thereby conning the gambling buff — the punter is bestowed with judgments, but actually they don’t realistically remove the customer’s long term negative odds. That is brought about by the the gaming room never paying the full sum as hoped for. This systematic process is recurrently seen at work in famous casino games such as seven-card stud, dice, roulette or blackjack.

Five-card stud is genuinely an immensely popular casino pastime. The customers, playing with covered hands, will bet into a central pot that is finally awarded to the winning gamester enjoying the highest combination of cards. (Obviously, the coolest bluffing hand may well prevail ..) Not far removed from seven-card stud poker, blackjack too is an immensely trendy casino pastime. Most of its fame is a result of its peculiar mix of luck and craft and decision making, not to forget a praxis identified as “counting”. This is an approach through which customers are in a position to actually skew the arm of chance of the card game for their own good both by wagering and strategic decisions established on the hands dealt.

Craps is the name of another incredibly popular casino game making use of the throw of two dice. Customers may bet on the outcome of of 1 spin, or on a sequence of spins of two dice. In contrast to blackjack, there can’t be a credible winner betting system punters could utilize to improve the odds. Roulette is a well-known pastime - a croupier whirls a roulette wheel that accommodates a set of thirty-seven (classical roulette) or thirtyeight (American roulette) distinctively tagged chambers in which a ball must settle, which defines the winning number Supposing that a participant bets on a particular number and wins, in other words they’ve got a lucky hand, the ward will be thirty five to one, the original pledge will be rebated. Consequently in total it is multiplied by a factor of 36.

We strongly recommend you be on guard though, for many of those betting saloon games of chance may well be terribly addiction forming. Myriad lives are proven to have been demolished by gambling & despite the fact that it might be fun, do please endeavour to keep your cool.

What should you do, then, if you get arrested whilst in a foreign country?

Know Your Rights

Under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations (1963), a generally accepted treaty of many, but not all, countries, it is provided that foreign authorities are to inform the consul officer of the arrest of their nationals; or in some countries, only at request of the national.

Should you find yourself arrested, immediately request for the officials to notify you’re nearest embassy or consulate. You may be denied this right if the treaty is not in force between either country. If that happens, keep trying to persuade someone to make the contact for you.

What to expect from the Consul Officers

Once the consul officers have been notified of your arrest, they will eventually call or visit you. They will make known to you the general proceedings of the local judicial system; and make sure that you are fully aware of your rights and what is happening. Also, only at your approval, they will contact your family and friends about your arrest, in which they will relay to them your requests for financial or other aid.

While your consul officers are able to offer help, they are unable to demand your release, or obtain special treatment for you other than what is provided to the locals. But they will do all they can to protect your rights under the local law, ensuring you are not abused or discriminated against.

On legal matters, your consul officers are in no position to neither provide legal advice, represent you on trial, nor subsidize your legal fees or pay your fines with government funds. They are, however, able to assist you by providing a list of local attorneys who can represent you in court. If the local people do not commonly speak your language, they will shortlist the attorneys who do.

Remember that your consul officers will do their best to assist you through your arrest.

Be safe, not sorry.

As long as you are in a foreign country, you will be subject to its laws. The best bet to avoid being arrested abroad is to familiarize yourself with the laws of the country you are about to visit. You can do this by contacting your destination country’s embassy or consular in your area to inquire about any laws that might be contrary to that of your own countries. You may also request this information from your selected airline company.

Take special note of the laws and regulations pertaining to:

Drug violations

Possession of firearms

Photographing government, police or military constructions

Purchasing of Antiques

By going through this trouble while planning your vacation, you can rest assure you will not be unknowingly breaking any foreign laws during your holiday.

This festive season there have been many claims that our traditional Christmas is under threat. One story even said that teachers are being told by the British government to protect children from ‘Scary Santas’

In truth, the article about ’scary santa’ which provoked the outcry was only advising teachers on what to do if some children were particularly bewildered or anxious about Christmas outings, changes in routine or meeting a strange old man with a beard - allcompletely reasonable reactions if you think about it logically.

Infact, as many parents already know, a lot of very young children are scared of Father Christmas - and why not? To ask a small child to go up to and sit on the knee of a strange old man is not something we would even consider at any other time of the year.

Nevertheless, Father Christmas or Santa Claus has become the human face of the festive season. The image of an old man with long white beard, red coat, and sack of toys is everywhere.

He is seen as a jolly, friendly soul who lives in the North Pole making toys and then, with the help of flying reindeer, a large sleigh and a lot of magic, he brings presents to all children on the night before Christmas (or in some countries on St Nicholas Day - 6th December)

Most children up to the about 8 years old really believe this is true, and it does bring a magical side to the stress and increasing commercialism of the whole season.

The idea of bringing gifts at Christmas time can be traced back to the nativity story and indeed before, with the Roman celebration of Saturnalia.

Father Christmas himself was originally part of an old English midwinter festival, and he was then dressed in green, a sign of the returning spring. The man we dipict today is also based on Santa Claus who became known in England during the 1870’s. His name comes from the Dutch name for St. Nicholas which is Sinter Klaas.

St. Nicholas was a 4th Century Christian saint from the area of Myra (modern day Turkey). He was a very shy man and wanted to give money to poor people without them knowing about it. One day he climbed onto the roof of a house and dropped a purse of money down the chimney, apparently it landed in a stocking which had been put to dry by the fire. This may explain the belief that Father Christmas comes down the chimney and places gifts in children’s stockings.

Alongside the stories of St Nicholas, we get a lot of today’s Father Christmas traditions from American ideas from the 19th Century. One particular poem, written by Clement Clarke Moore in 1822, describes more or less exactly what most people image to be Father Christmas.

The poem is often called ‘The Night Before Christmas’, but it was originally titled ‘A Visit from St Nicholas’:

” He was dressed all in fur from his head to his foot, and his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, and he looked like a pedlar just opening his sack.
His eyes how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry;
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, and the beard on his chin was as white as the snow.
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face, and a little round belly that shook when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly.
He was chubby and plump,–a right jolly old elf– And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself. “

This all shows that the tradition of Father Christmas is a strong and historic one which had adapted to suit different people and times throughout recent centuries.

So, as long as we remember to treat our children with respect and act accordingly if they are scared, then I am sure that Father Christmas will become become a much loved figure who will enchant them for many years to come.

The Christmas season is upon us, and with it one of the most difficult times to stick on a budget. It’s so easy to go overboard on gifts for those you love. There’s always some cute, cheap item that is just perfect, but when you find things like that over and over, they really add up.

It’s no fun being on a tight budget at this time of year. You wish you could give your kids the gifts they want the most, and give other family members just the right gift too.

There are several ways to give well thought out gifts at this time of year without overdoing it on credit cards or adding to your financial worries. All it takes is a little planning and creativity. Here are a few ideas.

Draw names.
You’ll still have to do the shopping for your kids, of course, but getting together with your siblings or other family members and drawing names can save a lot of money, as well as shopping time. This also allows a single, nicer gift to be given, as you can agree beforehand what should be spent on each person, and have it be a gift from all of you.

Give your time.
Make up coupons with favors you will do for the other person. This could be mowing the lawn for your parents or giving your husband a backrub. It could be babysitting a friend’s kids.

Share your talents.
If there’s something you do well that others have been expressing an interest in learning, give them a card saying you will teach them. This could be music lessons or it could be website design or organizing their home.

Note cards and stamped envelopes.
These are perfect for the person who loves to write. Find an attractive set and get some stamps, and you’re ready to go. You could even take this a step further and create your own design on plain cards.

Family calendar.
This one takes a fair bit of time, and you’ll need other family members to send you pictures, but makes a great gift. If they give you prints, you can make a collage, but if the photos are digital you can manipulate them for a wonderfully fun family calendar. Take the results to your local print shop and have them make them into calendars.

Make picture frames.
Get a cheap picture frame and decorate it with things that the recipient enjoys.

Bake!
Homemade treats are often welcome. If you have a great pie, cake or cookie recipe, you can be sure people will thank you even if they grumble something about calories.

Make Christmas ornaments.
There are all kinds of ideas for beautiful Christmas ornaments. You can buy the cheap clear glass balls and fill them or paint them. Another idea is to take a clear jar or vase, and put in some Christmas lights, then add potpourri. It looks beautiful when plugged in and smells great.

Make gift baskets or jars.
This doesn’t have to mean cheesy, handmade stuff that you really don’t do normally. You can make gift baskets with special items inside, such as bath salts and other items good for relaxation. You can print a card with a special recipe and include the ingredients in a jar.
The possibilities here are just about endless, both in terms of affordability and creativity. Think about the recipient’s hobbies and put something together that relates; garden gloves with a plant or seeds for a gardener, gourmet coffee with a cup for the coffee lover, and so forth.

You don’t have to go overboard with gifts to have a wonderful Christmas. A little planning goes a long way toward easing the financial strain that so many feel at this time of year. Getting creative with Christmas presents doesn’t only save money - it makes the gifts more meaningful!

A big and forever growing mobile phone market following the rule of introducing ‘a phone a day’ has now made it extremely complicated for mobile customers to compare cell phone offers. Most of the time, there are numerous aspects that cell phone customers need to look into when making cell phone comparisons that some of the most essential ones get missed out.

As a result, one consistently end up having a phone which is either too dear or a mobile phone which is not suited for your mobile phone usage profile. Thus we explain in this article about the two very most vital things that mobile phone customers should consistently look at when making cell phone purchases. This might well help people land a cell phone that at least meets the basic criteria customers are looking for. Get the cheapest o2 mobile phone deals with MobileShop.

The complete mobile market is booming on the basis of brilliant features like cameras that keep getting added every week. Still, a particularly large majority of people buy mobile phones based on their appearance, brand image and wonderful marketing only to regret later when cell phone customers observe that their fantastic handset lacks an astonishingly basic feature like sending emails or bluetooth. Innumerable superb pricey cell phones sell on the basis of marketing, brand and looks at costs that are unjustified given the lack of high end features. For example the most current Apple Iphone 3G does not let mobile customers forward text messages to all. Unfortunately, this phone’s target audience, eighteen to thirty five, gets to regret the absence of this cell phone feature only after spending months worth of wages on it. Consequently make sure that your unbelievable new mobile phone has all the features like mp3 players you require before paying up. Since mobile organisations will never tell people about the awesome features that their cell phones lack, reading up online cell phone write ups is the greatest way to do it.

Legitimate work-from-home Internet business is a goldmine waiting to be mined. In fact, with profits in excess of a billion dollars a year being made on the Internet, work-at-home business, whether online or off, is a potential treasure chest waiting to be opened. The real treasure, of course, is the freedom and independance you achieve when you succeed in making your living “off the grid” with your own legitimate home income. Rest assured, legitimate work at home opportunities do exist.

Home business on the Internet is thriving. Think, more and more people with already esablished businesses are expanding onto the Internet. More and more people are using the Internet to generate additional, supplementary streams of income, and more and more people are turning to the legitimate opportunities of home-based Internet business as their primary source of livlihood.

The beauty of this is that for the relatively low cost of an Internet connection, you can sell your products and services to local, regional, national, and international customers. It doesn’t matter how big or small your business, whether or not you have a huge inventory, or an inventory of one product. In fact, with the Internet, your product can be purely digital, that is, exist only as information available for automatic download after payment. The point is that for the price of an Internet connection, you can reach potential customers all over the world.

True work-at-home opportunity, true success in legitimate work-from-home business lies in your vision and imagination. There are now many online businesses that provide you with tools to help you use the Internet to realize your dream of independance. Many offer much that is free to help you better understand your own needs and wants, and to better understand where you need to spend money. Do not be tempted by the next latest craze or fad, but rather pay attention to products that have stood the test of time or have otherwise proven themselves. Even though the technology may change, the essence of business does not.

Remember, the principles of legitimate business, whether work-from-home on the Internet or not, remain the same. No single e-book, or Internet marketing software or website tool by itself will provide the answer to the One Big Secret. These are merely tools, after all. By themselves, blueprints, hammers, and saws cannot build a house; that task remains up to you!

There is little doubt that those who have visited the regions of the English Lake District and Cumbria will recall and recount with pleasure the images of the lakes, mountains and tarns which together are the fundamental components of this beautiful area.

There may also be some damp memories of a place with an above average rainfall. A phlegmatic Australian work colleague when caught in a particularly heavy shower during a visit some years ago concluded that it was “wet as an otters pocket”. This definition is certainly a strong contender for inclusion in all Lake District and Cumbria tourist information publications.

A well known feature of the region is one where rapidly changing weather conditions can transform a rainy day to one of clearing skies and sunshine within a short space of time, or vice-versa. This is especially so on the higher ground, and it is easy to visualize the difficulties experienced by the hill farmers and those workers, who, in earlier times, toiled all year round to collect the stone scattered on the fell-sides to use for building the dry stone walls which wind up and over seemingly impossibly steep gradients.

Areas of these fell-sides are the proving grounds in the traditional tests of skill and endurance by the men and women fell racers, and the dogs in the hound trailing contests.

Born in 1808, Will Ritson, a shepherd, wrestler, and latterly, landlord of the Wasdale Head Inn, was renowned as a highly entertaining raconteur of colourful tales. It is reported that even William Wordsworth and Thomas De Quincey on occasions, were to be found among an appreciative crowd of listeners.

He told of owning a dog, a cross between a trail hound and a golden eagle, capable of soaring over the dry stone walls and any other obstacle in its path. Credulous visitors from out of County were enthralled by his account of locally grown giant turnips, which, he said, were of such massive proportions, that villagers would spend weeks carving out edible portions before surrendering the remaining outer skins as shelters for the Herdwick sheep.

The end result of the popularity of Will’s yarns has been the creation of the annual “Biggest Liar in the World” competition. The contest is held each year at the Bridge Inn, Santon, before an enthusiastic audience well nourished on a menu of “tatie pie” consisting of local mutton, black pudding, potatoes and red cabbage, washed down by some of the very fine and potent locally brewed ale. Be careful that tiger beef has not been an added ingredient!

There is no record of Will entering the “World Gurning Championship” held during the annual Egremont Crab Fair each September. Contestants stand on a stage with a horse collar placed over their head and shoulders. This unlikely adornment frames the attempts to contort their faces into distorted expressions. Winners of the most bizarre and grotesque faces are decided by the level of audience applause. It is believed that the Lake District in Cumbria is the only place in the world where such a contest is held. Visitors to our region may well hear a recalcitrant local child being reprimanded in terms of “stop yer gurning.”

Tradition is important to the town and village communities and many hours are spent in preparation for the village shows of the summer months featuring sheep-dog trials, sheep-shearing demonstrations, ferret racing (yes, ferret racing), livestock displays, side stalls, home-baked produce, and of course, Cumberland Wrestling.

Two very popular events are the Cumbria Steam Gathering of early traction engines, vintage/veteran buses, fire-engines, cars, motor-cycles and machinery, and the Westmorland County Show with emphasis on livestock, plus side-stalls offering a wide selection of wares including local products. Children are always well-catered for at all venues with an assortment of amusements both for the toddler and the older child.

This diverse blend of local events will add something extra to your visit and you will sense the local pride and be able to observe customs and timeless traditions which combine to make the Lake District and Cumbria so unique.

P Scott was born and bred in The English Lake District.
After a successful career as an aircraft engineer, Peter and his son, David, run a website promoting all aspects of The Lake District with their new website: http://www.wordsworthcountry.com
