How To Attract More Visitors To Your Website

There are numerous factors to consider when evaluating the potential commercial success (i.e. profitability) of a website. A few of these include content, quality of the content, items being marketed, appearance, etc. I could go on forever about the various website building blocks needed in order to be successful, but without traffic (visitors), no website is going to be profitable.

You may think that the site you have created is top-notch, but if the only ones visiting it are your family and friends then chances are very good that you’re not going to make many sales (or whatever it is your site is designed to accomplish).

So how, as a Webmaster, do you tackle the seemingly huge task of getting traffic (that’s so vitally important to your success) driven to your site? To answer that, we first need to look at two types of visitor categories:

Non-targeted: A non-targeted visitor is defined as a person that is not truly interested in, or searching for, what your site offers. They may have stumbled across your site while searching for something else. While they may or may not purchase goods/services from your site, it should be assumed that they were not actively searching for what you’re marketing.

Targeted: A targeted visitor to your website would be a person that found your page using some type of search parameter. This person would have been actively searching for the content that your site offers. This person is much more likely to purchase from your site than the non-targeted visitor. Obviously, targeted traffic is what a website owner needs in order to be profitable.

Now here is the dilemma of the day: How do you generate traffic and then how do you determine if that traffic is targeted or non-targeted? Below I have listed some of the major ways of driving traffic to your website along with the type of visitor to expect from each one.

Search Engines: If you have optimized your site correctly, visitors you receive from the major search engines such as Google, MSN, and Yahoo (and many of the lesser engines) should be targeted to your site. These people have actively searched out the keywords that have led them to your page. The best thing about this traffic is that it is free.

The downside of generic search engine traffic is getting your site ranked high enough so that people actually find your site. Most people will not look much beyond the first three pages of search results. So if you are not in the top thirty results for a certain keyword, the chances are good that you’re not going to see much traffic from them.

Pay-Per-Click (PPC): Pay-per-click, much like the generic search engine results discussed above, should be highly targeted traffic. The basic premise with PPC is that you place your ad with the different search engines, directories, etc. and then they distribute your ad according to your selected keywords. When a person clicks on your ad, you pay a set price. When done correctly, PPC can be an excellent way of driving targeted traffic. The downside of PPC is that you pay for every single click. Though many of the top PPC companies allow you to set up a monthly budget, it can still become very expensive.

Cost-Per-Action (CPA): Cost-per-action works much like PPC. The main difference between the two is that you pay only when the visitor performs a required task at your site (purchase, sign up, etc.) Of course the cost for this service is much higher than standard PPC. Also, CPA services usually require that you place a piece of code on your “Checkout” or “Thank You” page which alerts them to the fact that the visitor came from their service in order for them to charge you accordingly.

Traffic Exchanges: A traffic exchange website (Traffic Swarm, etc) is based on the idea of “You scratch my back, then I’ll scratch yours.” I.E. they will display your ad the same number of times that you’ve clicked to view someone else’s. Some offer ratios of 1:1 (meaning for every time you click on another ad, your ad will be displayed), while others offer differing plans. The downside of traffic exchanges is that most of the people clicking on the ads are doing it for the same reason you are - to get their ad placed. Therefore, any traffic generated through a traffic exchange will more than likely not be targeted. It is possible to make the occasional sale or sign up through these services, but they will probably be few and far between.

Article Submission: Writing & submitting articles about a subject that’s relevant to your website content is an excellent way to receive targeted traffic. This can normally be done for free or at a very low cost. An added benefit is that each time a website posts your article you will receive a one-way link to your website– which is highly favored by the search engines.

The process is really quite simple: 1) Write an article about a subject that visitors to your site would be interested in. At the bottom of the article place a “resource box” that contains a little blip about you and/or your website along with your link. (See my example below entitled “ABOUT THE AUTHOR”). 2) Submit your article to the many online article directories. This can be done manually or with software programs designed to automate the process for you.

If your article is well written, it may be placed on hundreds of highly visited websites. When a person reads your article and decides to click on the link you’ve provided in the resource box, you get the [usually] free targeted traffic. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Link Exchange: Once upon a time link exchanging was the BIG thing. I believe that has changed and no longer is as heavily-weighted by the search engines. The whole point of exchanging links was supposed to be because you believed your visitors would benefit from your link partner’s content. Link farms changed & abused all of that, so the search engine “points” given for backward links have been adjusted down. Don’t count them out completely as a way to drive traffic to your site, but don’t count on them solely either. Exchanging links with like-minded websites can still deliver some decent traffic, which, in theory, should also be the coveted targeted type.

In conclusion: As a website owner, targeted traffic is the name of the game. You can have the best looking site with the coolest graphics, but if no one can find your site then all your work isn’t going to do you much good.

Seek out highly targeted traffic for your website. Optimize your site for the search engines and then choose a few of the options listed above to start driving visitors to your site today. Once you get the visitors there…well, that’s another article for another day.

Publicity Tips to Get More Traffic to Your Web Site

Web sites are on my mind, since I just updated mine. Now, I am in the process of publicizing it. As my search engine marketing (pay-per-click) costs are soaring, I have been looking for ways to get free traffic to my site. Perhaps these tips from my research can help you increase traffic to your Web site:

1. Write articles in your area of expertise. Submit them to both print and online media that would be interested in printing the articles. For example, an accountant could submit an article on little known business tax deductions to various trade journals and Chamber of Commerce newsletters. An attorney could submit an article on typical real estate closing issues to real estate trade association Web sites and real estate email newsletters.

You should always include your Web site, along with your name and company name at the end of the article. That way prospects are directed to your Web site for more information.

2. Include content on your Web site that people want — and update/add to it frequently. Offering free articles, tips of the day, or f*ree publicity opportunities (what I will be doing) gives people a reason to visit — and keep coming back.

3. Partner with another organization. Many Web sites (mine included) offer Web site information of recommended resources (other businesses or professionals). Those same businesses can recommend you. In addition, partnering with a charitable organization (where you are the sponsor) will often result in a Web site link to your business.

Web site publicity is critical for your business, and the time and effort involved will lead to increased traffic to your site.

Content & Links Share the ‘Kingdom’

If you run one or more web sites, you’ve probably heard it said many times: “Content is king!” The thinking goes something like this: if you provide lots of high quality content on your web pages, it will attract lots of visitors who will buy from you and spread the word to others. You’ll end up ‘king of the hill’ in your particular niche.

Let’s examine that notion a little more closely. For existing sites that already have listings in search engines, links on related sites, directory listings, etc., content is the thing that brings visitors back for more. If, however, you have a brand new web site, using a domain name that has not been previously used, what’s wrong with this picture? Simply put, it’s this: the best content in the world won’t get you visitors if people don’t know your site exists.

The Power of Link Popularity

That’s where the equally important power of links comes into the picture. The web’s foundation is the interlinking of web sites. Without links, every site would be a tiny island in a huge ocean that isn’t on any map. At no time is this fact more starkly evident than when you unveil a new site on a new domain. We’ve all been there. Not only does your new site get zero traffic, you can’t even hear crickets chirping - even they don’t know it’s there!

The solution, of course, is to let people know you’re out there by building link popularity. What’s ‘link popularity,’ you ask? It is the sum total of external web pages with links pointing to your site. This includes all the sites most webmasters target: search engines, directories, related sites, and unrelated sites.

As your site’s link popularity grows, two great things happen. First, all those links on other sites begin to drive visitors to your site. If most of those links are on sites in the same niche as your own, most of those visitors will be pre-screened. In other words, they will be people with an interest in your niche’s subject matter - not random visitors.

Second, link popularity plays a significant role in determining where your site will rank at the major search engines for searches related to your site’s theme. As you amass more inbound links, and depending on the words used in those links, your site will move up the rankings and you’ll see more and more traffic. Just as with links on related sites, this ‘organic’ (i.e., free) search engine traffic will consist of people who are actively seeking out your site’s information. Those are the visitors you must have to succeed! Best of all, you get those visitors without having to pay one penny for them!

The Power of Great Content

Once you have a steady flow of visitors surfing in to your site, the focus changes to the quality of the content they find there. Why? Because you want as many of those first-time visitors as possible to be impressed enough by what they find on your web site to bookmark it and spread the word to family, friends, and co-workers. You can’t buy better advertising than word-of-mouth from trusted sources like that!

Of course, great content will also encourage a higher percentage of your visitors to buy from you - your products, services, paid memberships, etc. Put it all together and it’s clear that excellent content will both make you more money and get your site more link popularity. It’s like an endless feedback loop that builds and builds as your site ages.

Why Successful Site Owners Concentrate on Both

But, the key in the beginning, when you’ve got a brand new site on your hands, is growing link popularity. Get that trickle of traffic started with those links; then let your great content do the lion’s share of the work to close the deal.

The growth of your site will constantly revolve around its dependence on content and links. Those who have made the comment, “Content is king!” a widely known catch phrase have really done a disservice to new site owners. A much more accurate (but less catchy) phrase is this one: “Content and links share the kingdom.”

One Way Links are Given and Accepted with Love and are For Ever.–Grab Them!

Unlike Reciprocal Links, One-Way Links also known as Inbound Links are obtained by you or in fact given to you with Love and for ever. Yes,they have come to stay. One-Way Link is a link pointing to your website from another site. You do not have to link back to that website. In other words you need not reciprocate. One-Way Links play a vital role in increasing your Link Popularity. Link Popularity is a measure of the number of sites of quality and relevance that point to your website. The more number of such sites, the higher will your page rank be.

Search Engines consider One-Way Links superior to Reciprocal Links because the website that links to your site without getting a link back, endorses the fact that yours is a website of quality.

Webmasters are known to adopt various methods to artificially increase the Link Popularity of their websites, such as purchasing of high PR links. Search Engines have now become aware of this and hence major Search Engines appear to be devaluing sites that solely depend on reciprocal links.

Good Reciprocal Links are often obtained by begging and are in some instances not permanent due to unethical practices of some webmasters. On the other hand One-Way Links have a different story to tell.

1. If your website has good content and valuable information, other webmasters will link to your site, because they Love and appreciate the contents of your site. You thus get a permanent One-Way Link more often with the same theme as that of your website.

2. I have posted about 550 articles in my website written by other webmasters, because I Love those articles and would like my visitors too, to appreciate and benefit from these articles. Similarly several hundreds of webmasters have published my articles in their Directories, Ezines, Newsletters and Websites for the same reason. Writing expert articles of quality, that are informative and educative, sincerely from your heart is appreciated by the audience. The result is that your articles are often sought after and published by webmasters. Thus you are given a permanent One-Way Link with Love.

3. Listing in Web Directories is another great way of securing One-Way Links. In addition to well known Directories such as Yahoo Directory (charges a fee for guaranteed listing), The Open Project Directory (DMOZ), and Joe Ant Directory, there are several other Secondary Directories that Love to list your website without requesting a link back. A list of these Directories can be obtained by going into the Search Engines. By submitting your website to the relevant category in these directories you are assured of a high quality relevant One-Way Link that will be there for ever. Furthermore there are several high PR Directories who Love to list your website but charge a fee for listing. Get listed and you are again assured of a quality relevant One Way Link for ever.

4. If you have purchased a product and like the product, write a good testimonial about the product and send it across to the webmaster or vendor concerned with your URL in it. He would be thankful to you and would Love to publish your testimonial, thereby giving you a One-Way Link.

In addition to these methods there are additional ways in obtaining one way links by posting relevant comments in Forums, Blogs and submitting Press Releases etc.

To increase their link popularity, webmasters endeavor to acquire as many quality reciprocal links or one way links. For reasons already indicated Webmasters Love one- way links and Search Engines appear to Love them even more. The manner in which One-Way Links are obtained can be viewed from a different perspective altogether. Webmasters Love your website and link it to theirs. They love your articles and post it in theirs. They love your product and write a glowing testimony. Directories love your quality website and list it. You love them in return for giving you a One-Way Link for ever. On the other hand in reciprocal links exchange or link trade as some term it the whole approach revolves around begging and bargaining.

The more number of relevant one way links you obtain, the greater and faster your chances of increasing your link popularity and climbing up the Page Rank ladder. The benefits of a high page rank are numerous. So the earlier you start to capitalize on these On-Way Links that are given for ever with love, the happier you are going to be.

What is Windows Web Hosting ?

Web hosting has been around for several years now and has evolved from simple HTML pages hosting small simple sites with a few images into full blown web based hosted applications where end users can visit a site, interact with the web site owner and even purchase goods and services all over the internet.

Web hosting platforms vary from different types of operating systems. Microsoft Windows Server and Redhat Linux are just two examples and probably the most well known web hosting platforms. So, what is Windows web hosting and what are the advantages and disadvantages to hosting your web site on a Windows Server. Well, that’s just the answer isn’t it ?

Windows Web hosting utilizes the Microsoft Windows Server operating system to host websites containing simple HTML pages and even applications written in ASP or ASP.NET. Windows uses a built-in application or “service” called Internet Information Services (abbreviated as IIS).

IIS is the “Service” or “application” that runs on a windows server that is responsible for serving or rendering your HTML pages to a browser. Whenever you visit a site, say www.3essentials.com and you view the content, your web browser is “downloading” or “Viewing” the pages that are stored on our Windows Server, via IIS.

Why use Windows and not Linux, or Unix ? This usually comes down to a couple of “proprietary” requirements you may have when searching for a web hosting provider. If you need to use ASP or ASP.NET, then these scripting languages are only available on Windows. If you have never designed a web page before then most likely either Windows or Linux will work fine for your needs. With Windows Web Hosting from 3Essentials, you have many different options in getting your HTML pages that you design uploaded to your web hosting account.

You can use File Transfer Protocal (FTP), there are many Free FTP programs available and some that you can buy at very reasonable prices. If you use FrontPage or Macromedia DreamWeaver you can upload your pages directly from the application.

Sending and receiving email is done easily on a Windows hosting account. Once your mailbox has been created you can use a WebMail interface to send and receive email from a web browser or you can use Outlook and Outloox Express email clients.

Self Management of your website on a Windows Web Hosting Plan with 3Essentials hosting is made very easy with our Implementation of the Award Winning Control Panel software by Sw-Soft called Plesk. Plesk is a web based interface to your Windows web hosting account that allows you to create e-mail addresses and mailboxes, view your web site traffic statistics, set permissions on your HTML, ASP, and ASP.NET pages… and more.
